Waukegan bylines withheld

By Ralph Zahorik
Unit vice chair

Waukegan Guild members withheld their bylines last week from a "Super Tuesday" edition of The News-Sun to protest the lack of progress in reaching a contract settlement. Monthly, on a Tuesday, the newspaper focuses nearly an entire issue on one community in the area. It's a big deal.

Except for stringers, participation was 100 percent. More and lengthier byline strikes may follow. Waukegan Guild members set a record in the 990s for the longest byline strike in Guild history (almost a year).

Plans also are being made for informational picketing outside the News-Sun/Pioneer Press building on Delany Road in Waukegan. News-Sun Guild members are talking with Pioneer Guild members about possible joint actions. (Pioneer is upstairs; we're downstairs). A sign-making party will be held starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Grayslake. All are welcome. For details, call Ralph Zahorik, 847-244-0020.

News-Sun Guild members would take what amounts to a pay cut if the company's current proposal is accepted. A 2 percent per year raise is proposed, but the company wants to take back its contribution to a 401K plan. The company also wants a clause removed from the contract that requires any purchaser of The News-Sun to honor honor the contract. This clause was important during two previous sales of the newspaper.
